In Loving Memory of Joann Agnes Wess

Joann Agnes Wess, age 83, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026. Born on September 16, 1942, Joann was a deeply devoted daughter, a cherished wife, a brilliant scientist, and a beacon of warmth and faith to everyone who knew her.

Joann was the beloved daughter of the late John J. Bukovic and Anne (Perucco) Bukovic. Growing up in a household rooted in strong family values, she carried her parents' legacy of hard work, kindness, and devotion throughout her entire life. She spent many beautiful years building a life alongside her beloved husband, the late Gerald B. Wess, with whom she shared a deep, enduring partnership.

Joann earned her undergraduate degree from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, and her Master’s Degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. As a trailblazer in public health, she built a distinguished career as a microbiologist/immunologist. She began her career at the Food and Drug Administration and before joining the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Her research, intellect, and commitment to protecting workers left a lasting impact on her colleagues and the scientific community until her well-deserved retirement in 2005.

A woman of profound faith, Joann was a devoted member of Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her commitment to her parish community brought her great comfort, and she lived out her faith daily through her quiet strength and friendly nature. Joann also found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life, most notably through the companionship of her beloved dog, Brandy, who brought endless affection and light to her days.

Joann’s life was defined by her grace, her sharp mind, her countless friendships, and her unwavering spirit. Her memory will remain forever alive in the hearts of her lifelong friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 28 at 10:30 AM at Guardian Angels Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Guardian Angels Cemetery.
